Streaming was once a reprieve from cable. Not only could you watch whatever you wanted at any given time, but you didn’t have to sit through five-minute-long commercial breaks. And the best part was the price: Netflix, for example, cost just $7.99 / month when it launched its standalone streaming service in 2010. Amazon’s Prime Video was the same, offering ad-free streaming as a perk with its Prime membership. Hulu was an outlier at the time, but that’s because it allowed you to stream ad-supported TV shows and movies for free. It later added a $7.99 / month Hulu Plus subscription, with limited advertising.

But the commercial-free streaming model was so appealing that when companies launched rival streaming services, most made them ad-free by default. Disney Plus cost $6.99 / month when it launched in 2019, followed by the $4.99 / month subscription to Apple TV, and the launch of HBO Max’s $14.99 / month streaming service. (There were some exceptions, of course, like Paramount Plus, which launched with ads for $4.99 / month, and NBCUniversal’s Peacock, which offered some titles for free alongside a $4.99 / month ad-supported tier with access to all of its shows and movies.)

As the streaming industry matured and viewers settled into the services of their choice, many executives soon realized that they couldn’t make money just by adding new subscribers in an already saturated market. Moreover, Netflix lost subscribers for the first time in more than a decade in 2022, while the streaming businesses run by its competitors remained unprofitable. Streamers needed a solution — especially so they could keep spending the billions required to fill their libraries with movies and TV shows.

In between steady waves of price hikes, major streaming services have adopted advertising one by one in a bid to boost profitability. HBO Max first rolled out a cheaper, ad-supported tier in 2021. Even Netflix, whose former CEO Reed Hastings said the service would never have ads, walked back on its promise by introducing its ad-supported plan in 2022. Disney Plus followed suit, and Amazon Prime Video automatically placed its subscribers in an ad-supported tier, forcing them to pay extra to get access to commercial-free viewing.

Now that nearly all of the most popular streamers have ads, the pricing gap between ad-supported and ad-free tiers has grown wider. Streaming services often target ad-free tiers with the biggest price increases, with Netflix most recently raising the price of its standard and premium plans by $2, compared to $1 for its ad-supported tier. Now, the price to go ad-free on Netflix is $19.99 / month (or $26.99 if you want 4K HDR) — more than double the original $7.99 / month subscription.

HBO Max similarly issued a $2 hike for ad-free subscriptions last year. It now costs $18.49 / month for its standard plan or $22.99 / month for premium, a sizable leap from its original $14.99 / month ad-free subscription. Prime Video also doubled the price to go ad-free earlier this year and locked 4K streams behind the pricier, $4.99 / month subscription that gets tacked onto your $14.99 / month Prime membership. And Disney Plus, which once offered an ad-free subscription for $6.99 / month, now costs $18.99 / month commercial free.

There’s a strategy behind this: Executives across the streaming industry have reported earning more average revenue per user (ARPU) on ad-supported tiers, as they rake in cash from viewer subscriptions and the ads they sell to them. In January, Netflix said its advertising business earned $1.5 billion in 2025, making up just a fraction of the company’s $45.2 billion total revenue. But Netflix’s ads tier is growing — now reaching more than 250 million viewers every month — and the company expects its advertising revenue to double to $3 billion this year.

More people are signing up for these ad-supported tiers as commercial-free plans grow more expensive. Among streaming services that offer cheaper, ad-supported plans, nearly half of their current subscribers in the US have signed up to the tier with ads, according to research from the analytics firm Antenna.

Apple TV remains the only major streaming service that doesn’t offer an ad-supported subscription — though questions remain about how long it will hold out. Apple currently shows ads during live broadcasts like Major League Soccer games. While some have speculated about Apple bringing ads to the rest of its service, the company pushed back on rumors, with its head of services Eddy Cue saying, “I don’t want to say no forever,” but “there are no plans.” Apple TV has steadily raised prices alongside other streamers and now costs $12.99 / month.

Meanwhile, Netflix is finding more ways to show ads to viewers, such as allowing brands to use AI to “blend” their ads with one of Netflix’s shows or movies. Other streamers are experimenting with different kinds of ads as well, with Peacock showing them on the profile selection menu and others invading paused screens. Unfortunately, viewers on a budget really have no other choice but to deal with ads — many of which are very repetitive or appear at the wrong times.

That’s why some viewers are looking toward alternatives, like the ad-filled but free-to-watch YouTube, which remains Netflix’s biggest rival, and free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) services such as Tubi, Pluto, and The Roku Channel. Some services are trying to balance affordability with ad-free streaming, with the Roku-owned Howdy offering over 10,000 hours of TV shows and movies without commercials for $2.99 / month.

While some of these options may serve as a temporary haven from high prices, they just don’t have the premium titles streaming has become known for. It’s become more expensive than ever to access shows and movies without interruptions, taking away what drew most people to streaming in the first place.

Theoretically, this process removes you from annoying marketing lists and makes it harder for randos to find you. I’ve used DeleteMe since January, and while it’s not a silver bullet for ensuring the complete absence of unwanted communication from strangers and scammers, it seems to have helped with the number of unsolicited marketing calls I get. It also helped clean up personal info from my Google results, so you’re more likely to read an old article I wrote than see where I live.

I have also used Incogni, where I managed an account for my elderly mother. She got similar results, which is to be expected, says DeleteMe executive Jason Dalrymple. Services like DeleteMe and others “all basically do the same thing,” he says. “We’re bound by the same laws and constraints in compliance. It’s a cat-and-mouse game.”

That’s because the degree to which data brokers need to cooperate with the requests of deletion companies is legally murky, given that there’s no comprehensive federal law in the US that regulates the way private companies can use personal data. Rather, most regulations are at the state level, where protections are varied (I live in Missouri, where I feel lucky to have running water). Some states, like California, have more protections, while many states have none. Regardless of where you live, data brokers aren’t necessarily just going to delete your information upon request. They may request further verification of your identity before complying and confirming the request was granted, they may deny the request, and they may ignore the request completely—all actions that require follow-up correspondence with the deletion service.

With DeleteMe and Incogni, you can track progress via a dashboard that provides an at-a-glance update on how many removal requests have been made and fulfilled. A few more clicks will show you specifics on each broker, though most of these will be unfamiliar to typical users. The main difference I noticed between DeleteMe and Incogni is that the former’s dashboard doesn’t update as often as the latter’s and also doesn’t show as many brokers being contacted.

I prefer the Incogni dashboard because it’s satisfying and reassuring to log in every few days and see that the company is crawling the web and busting brokers, each of which it rates based on their speed and general compliance. There are constant status updates for thousands of websites. DeleteMe, on the other hand, creates a report every few months showing progress on a smaller number of sites. Dalrymple argues that his company’s surgical approach is a feature, not a bug.

The Google TV Streamer 4K is more than just a terrific streaming device. It can also act as a smart home hub, letting you control all major smart home devices directly from your TV. Thanks to Prime Day, it’s now on sale for $74.99 at Amazon for Prime members, matching its best price to date. The streamer usually retails for $99.99, making this a $25 discount. If you don’t subscribe to Prime, it’s just $5 more at Best Buy and direct from Google.

The Google TV Streamer 4K is a great fit for people already invested in Google’s ecosystem. The device lets you control your TV with your voice via Gemini, while the Google TV interface pulls recommendations from across your streaming services and even displays Rotten Tomatoes scores. Setup is also quick and straightforward, taking only about 10 minutes in our testing. One particularly nice touch is that Google asks which streaming services you subscribe to during setup and then downloads the relevant apps for you, so you don’t have to install them one by one.

Temperatures may be soaring, but there’s an unseasonable chill on screens right now—at least when it comes to some of the movie offerings hitting streaming services this month.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos delivers a twisted take on Frankenstein in Poor Things on Netflix, while Shudder digs up painful family secrets and adds a side of demonic possession in The Voices of Our Mother. If you fancy some summer scares that are a bit more Halloween-grade, Netflix also has I Am Frankelda, a mesmerizing tour of a world of monsters and living nightmares, brought to life in stunning stop-motion.

There are also plenty of retro delights surfacing on streamers this month that are more than worth a rewatch. Hulu reinstalls Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which lands very differently in 2026; Criterion Channel is declassifying Sean Connery’s first outings as 007, with Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger coming to the specialist platform; and Prime Video brings all three Bill & Ted films back to the future (sorry).

Here are WIRED’s picks of the best movies to watch right now.

I Am Frankelda

A gorgeous stop-motion animated outing from Mexico—the country’s first such feature—this supernatural tale follows Francisca Imelda (Mireya Mendoza in both the original Spanish and the English dub), an aspiring young author in late 1800s Mexico with a penchant for the fantastic and the macabre. Taken to the monstrous world of Topus Terrentus by the winged Prince Herneval (Arturo Mercado Jr. in Spanish, Claudis Bridgeforth in English), Francisca is charged with becoming the realm’s new “nightmare teller,” responsible for crafting the tales of terror that its denizens live on. The only problem is the role is already filled, and power-hungry incumbent Procustes (Luis Leonardo Suárez; Mark Lewis), a demonic spider, doesn’t take kindly to being replaced. An exquisitely crafted, visually astounding masterpiece, imagine a mix of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Alice in Wonderland and you’re almost on the way to conceiving the darkly captivating magic of I Am Frankelda.

Poor Things

If the arrival of Bugonia on Netflix last month left you wanting more from the delightfully deranged pairing of director Yorgos Lanthimos and actor (and producer!) Emma Stone, look no further than Poor Things. Mad scientist Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) has spent years building a personal menagerie of stitched-together animal chimeras, but his latest and greatest success is his “daughter” Bella (Stone). A reanimated dead woman implanted with the brain of the fetus she was carrying, Bella has a childlike disposition but rapidly learns and evolves, especially under the tutelage of Baxter’s student Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef). However, one sexual awakening later and Bella is a runaway on a whistle-stop tour of Europe with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), running into remnants of her (or her body’s) old life, all while delving into newfound philosophies. Based on the novel of the same name by Scottish author Alasdair Gray, this surreal and darkly comedic reimagining of Frankenstein is peak Lanthimos—a visually lavish, almost indescribable strange experience.

Bill & Ted Trilogy

William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) might appear to be regular teen slackers in 1988, but by 2688 they’re revered as the Great Ones, the music of their band Wyld Stallyns inspiring a utopian future through the divine principle of being excellent to each other. Humanity might not be quite there yet, but here in 2026, both the original time-traveling comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its 1991 sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey—which sees the pair killed by their own futuristic robot duplicates before battling Death himself—are definitely firm cult favorites.

Starting today, new Xfinity customers in almost 20 markets — including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Nashville, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and more — can receive the Xfinity Gateway equipment they need to get online the same day they order it.

Customers can then set up the devices themselves to activate the service through the Xfinity app and get online almost instantly, instead of having to wait several days with no internet service.

And, like Atonemo’s existing Streamplayer, you can also listen to your favorite streaming services with it, using AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, or Tidal Connect.

The top of the device has two buttons for tuning in directly to NTS 1 and NTS 2. There’s also a large dial with 16 detents for switching between the station’s various infinite mixtapes.
When Fox announced its acquisition of Roku earlier this week, executives of both companies were quick to promise that not much would change in the near future. Sure, getting its hands on Roku will help Fox become a major force in streaming, and surpass the viewership of Netflix in the United States when you include Fox’s TV networks. But Roku will remain open to all streaming services, and Fox will keep selling its programming to anyone, they pledged.

Of course, that doesn’t mean everything will stay the same. I expect that the deal will have a significant impact on both companies, and that Roku owners will see major changes once it closes. Here’s what I believe is in store for Roku’s future:

The Roku Channel will become a Roku exclusive

One of the questions analysts had on a joint Fox and Roku investor call earlier this week was: What does this deal mean for the future of Tubi and The Roku Channel, the ad-supported streaming services operated by the two companies? The diplomatic answer: The services are complementary, with Tubi mostly serving up movies and TV shows on demand while The Roku Channel has a lot more eyeballs on free, ad-supported streaming channels (also known among industry insiders as FAST channels).

That’s true, to a degree. Tubi’s leadership initially didn’t believe in the potential of linear channels and instead put a greater emphasis on being a free Netflix alternative. Roku, on the other hand, had its software deeply embedded in smart TVs and knew that it could build a replacement for the cable guide if it went all in on linear streaming channels.

At the same time, Tubi and The Roku Channel do squarely compete with each other on third-party platforms like Fire TV, Google TV, and Samsung, where consumers can download either app to access free programming. Roku expanded onto those platforms a few years ago, but that expansion has been an ongoing cause of confusion for consumers. Many simply can’t understand why the Roku app they downloaded onto their Samsung TV or Fire TV doesn’t offer them the exact same experience as a Roku device.

Another cause of frustration: Roku offers owners of its devices the ability to subscribe to third-party services like HBO Max and Paramount Plus through The Roku Channel. But if they fire up The Roku Channel’s app on the Samsung TV in their bedroom, those paid subscriptions are MIA.

To simplify all that, I predict that Fox will opt to make The Roku Channel a Roku exclusive, and bet on Tubi as the sole app for ad-supported viewing on third-party devices.

Roku will abandon its IoT efforts

Over the years, Roku has tried many things to launch an ecosystem of devices around its platform. There was that streaming-optimized mesh router that never launched, and the smart speakers that have been sidelined in recent years.

More recently, Roku has bet aggressively on low-cost cameras, lightbulbs, and alarm systems. All of that made sense when the company was trying to go it alone and compete with the likes of Google and Amazon. The fear was that consumers may choose competing products if they couldn’t access their security camera feed on their Roku TV.

For Fox, IoT is little more than a distraction. The margins of these products are just too low, and there’s easier ways to get people to watch more Fox programming than launching yet another smart plug. That’s why I predict that Roku will phase out its IoT products and instead embrace the Matter standard to more easily work with third-party hardware.

However, I predict that Fox may treat Howdy as a bit of a wild card bet: one more way to monetize its content and a good opportunity to needle and undercut the competition. With that strategy, and with access to Fox’s massive back catalog of popular TV shows, I predict Howdy may turn into an unexpected hit with consumers wary of too many ads.

This year, I moved states and added on Verizon Home Internet, which has also been a positive experience and is cost-effective since I get to bundle it. I already have the most expensive Verizon service plan. I also bought a new device, added a cellular plan for my Apple Watch, got YouTube Premium along with Hulu and Spotify … there’s a good chance that I’m paying my power bill through Verizon and I just haven’t realized it yet. (The last part is a joke.)

Verizon just announced the new Verizon Simplicity Plan meant to reward loyal customers like me and make all these bits and pieces feel a bit less confusing. At $45 (with autopay and not including taxes and fees), it’s priced like an entry-level plan but offers top-tier network service, plus access to perks usually reserved for premium plans, like travel passes and discounted bundled streaming services. There’s also a new rewards program with cash back and Monday freebies. The new Simplicity plan just launched today, so I checked it out. Spoiler alert: I ended up deciding to switch up my service plan as a result.

Verizon Simplicity

Verizon Simplicity is a phone plan that costs $45 per month per line (or $30 per month per line with a switch discount for eligible mobile customers who switch to Verizon). That base price gets you 5G phone service with unlimited data, talk, and text; international roaming and satellite texting; 10 gigabytes of mobile hot spot data; plus Verizon Dollars, call filtering, and Verizon Family (a parental controls app). You might be able to bring your own phone, too. If you enroll in Verizon Loyalty, you won’t have to deal with any activation or upgrade fees, either.

After you get that baseline down, you can also add bundles to your line. For example, the Movie Lovers bundle adds on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ (with ads) and Netflix and HBO Max (with ads) for $23 a month. Those services would cost $40 per month purchased separately. Families might want to check out the bundles that come with Apple Music or YouTube Premium, plus Verizon Family Plus, for an extra $20 per month rather than $31. Another bundle gives you Google AI Pro, a 100-GB mobile hot spot, and a second phone number for $30 per month instead of $75.

These bundles are especially enticing if you would be paying for these services separately anyway. (To get the streaming services without ads, you have to do it through each service, which I have yet to figure out.) Especially when phone bills can feel so complex, I like how simple this option is, and I’m going to be switching as soon as I finish writing this story. There’s also a new bundle, Verizon One, which combines your mobile service and home internet for $70 per month with Auto Pay when you bring your own device, on one bill, taxes and fees included. Alas, I am not a new customer, so I can’t get in on it. It seems like an excellent deal if you’re paying for those services separately and you’re bringing your own device.

Verizon Dollars and Verizon Shine

Verizon Dollars are basically 3 percent cash back that you’ll get when you pay your bill, including on the cost of perks and other add-ons—not just your phone service. Verizon Dollars can be redeemed on gift cards, device purchases, products from the Verizon Store, and other third-party offerings. This program starts in July. So far, examples of stores where you can redeem Verizon Dollars include Sephora, Hilton, Marriott, and Starbucks.

There’s also Verizon Shine, which has different giveaways you can enter each Monday as well as “daily drops” and access to special seating and tickets for live events. This is a lot like T-Mobile’s popular Tuesday in-app promos, which occasionally feature great giveaways that have resulted in mogging Wingstop. Old-head Verizon customers like me will remember that the company used to have a rewards program where you could snag coffee shop gift cards and other similar items, so I’m happy to see something similar make a return. In the past, these items would get claimed very quickly, so I’m curious to see how fast this week’s drops go: free $5 Starbucks gift cards, FIFA wine tumblers and water bottles, and other merchandise. Right now, Verizon Shine’s Epic Win Monday giveaway winner will get to attend the FIFA World Cup finale with David Beckham. Not too shabby.

I wouldn’t say that checking my phone service app has been a high priority of mine thus far in my life, but I love free stuff, so apparently I’m going to be hanging out in the Verizon app on Mondays going forward.

All in all, I think these offerings are worth checking out whether you’re an existing Verizon customer or a potential new one. Any chance to save money is a win in my book. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a free gift card to claim.

In the days leading up to the 2026 World Cup, the streamer IShowSpeed—one of the most watched people on the planet, who occasionally moonlights as a rapper—released the music video “World Cup (Champions),” a song about flexing national pride where he mentions all 48 teams.

As with everything the 21-year-old born Darren Watkins Jr. does, the video was instantly everywhere. The song racked up over 7 million views on YouTube in under 24 hours. The internet rushed to christen it as the anthem of the tournament, even though the World Cup already has one. FIFA, following a ridiculous outpouring from fans and perhaps realizing the massive instant exposure he could bring, added the song to its official album.

That is the power of Speed—a one-man, always-on media network.

Speed started posting on YouTube as a teenager in 2017. But it wasn’t until the Covid-19 lockdowns, in 2020, that the Cincinnati, Ohio, native committed to streaming full-time. His passion for soccer, particularly his admiration for his favorite player, Cristiano Ronaldo, shaped his earliest broadcasts, where he played FIFA and NBA 2K as people watched along. His virality came thanks to the kind of scream-laden occasionally controversial antics the internet loves, but over time Speed ditched the stereotypical streamer playbook. The future of his brand existed outside of his bedroom.

As his audience expanded, so did his mission. Streamers succeed by getting fans to sit and watch. Speed doesn’t. The goal, he tells me, is to become a conduit of inspiration to his nearly 55 million subscribers. When he started engaging with people beyond his computer screen, it gave him purpose. He wants his audience to have that too. So in 2024 he leveled up and started recording travelogues from various countries, turning his stream into a global group chat where he introduced his young audience to different cultures. He has raced a cheetah in South Africa. Sparred with Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines. Was mobbed by fans in Jamaica and Barbados. While in Indonesia, he hit 1 million concurrent live viewers, making him the first English-speaking streamer since the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing to break the record on YouTube. Last year, he embarked on a monthlong, nonstop livestream tour across 25 US states, never once turning the camera off, even while asleep.

His rise intersects with a complete transformation in how sports are consumed. Linear television is dead. Streaming services struggle to retain viewers turned off by rising costs. People are their own media platforms now. Few have pulled that transition off with more daring—and reach—than Speed, who is basically inseparable from soccer’s global storytelling apparatus at this point. For generations Z and Alpha, he is practically ESPN.

For this year’s World Cup, Speed is bringing his love of the game to stream from different host cities. FIFA estimates the 2026 cup will draw more than 6 billion total viewers globally across the tournament’s month-plus of play. Speed’s livestreams, no doubt, will add even more eyes to that number.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

JASON PARHAM: You got into the game early, but now everyone wants to be a streamer or a podcast host. Is your level of fame still attainable?

ISHOWSPEED: It’s possible. Obviously, I have played a big, big role in this current generation of streaming, but years from now there are going to be people who are better at it than I was. There’s a big history behind it, with YouTube and Twitch, but the industry is still being born.

What defines your generation?

I am part of the first generation of media streamers. We are the mainstream. I mean, I would say a channel with 50 million subscribers is 100 percent a network. Even a channel with 1 million subs or 500—that’s the reason why streaming is so popular. This industry is a game, but at the end of the day, you can’t beat anybody else. I have to keep continuing to get better with who I am.
